Description
This layer contains two polygons representing the city's Historic Districts, Fort Washington Historic District and Old Cambridge Historic District. Historic Districts are groups of buildings, structures, and their surroundings that are architecturally and historically distinctive. Exterior changes to buildings within Historic Districts are subject to review by the Historical Commission made up of residents appointed by the City Manager. The GIS data layer was created from paper documents. Cambridge designated its first Historic Districts in 1963, under the state enabling law, Ch. 40C of the Mass. General Laws.

This dataset contains compliance status and energy and water use data gathered under the Building Energy Use Disclosure Ordinance (BEUDO) program. Property details, energy use and water use data are submitted by property owners or managers whose properties are subject to BEUDO through an online tool called ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. Parcel level property information is obtained from the City of Cambridge Property Database.
Energy and water use information submitted by property owners and managers is shown for properties that first began reporting data on energy used in 2015. Energy use for the listed Data Year is required to be reported by May of the next year. Properties subject to BEUDO reporting include:
- nonresidential properties 25,000 square feet or more,
- residential properties with 50 or more units and
- municipal properties 10,000 square feet or more.
- nonresidential properties 25,000 square feet or more,
- residential properties with 50 or more units and
- municipal properties 10,000 square feet or more.
Reports may include data on one or more buildings. The specific building IDs included (from the Cambridge GIS Building Footprints layer) are listed in the Buildings Included column. The report level is the most detailed level of energy use available - if multiple buildings are included in a report, we do not have energy use on the individual buildings, only the group. Building IDs and what they refer to have changed over time, even for buildings that did not change. To ensure you are using only comparable data when comparing reports over time, you should only make direct comparisons for reports with the same Reporting ID.
Properties with no energy data included are those that were identified as being subject to BEUDO for the given Data Year, but which did not submit a report.

Description
City of Cambridge, MA GIS basemap development project encompasses the land area of City of Cambridge with a 200 foot fringe surrounding the area and Charles River shoreline towards Boston. The basemap data was developed at 1" = 40' mapping scale using digital photogrammetric techniques. Planimetric features; both man-made and natural features like vegetation, rivers have been depicted. These features are important to all GIS/mapping applications and publication. A set of data layers such as Buildings, Roads, Rivers, Utility structures, 1 ft interval contours are developed and represented in the geodatabase. The features are labeled and coded in order to represent specific feature class for thematic representation and topology between the features is maintained for an accurate representation at the 1:40 mapping scale for both publication and analysis. The basemap data has been developed using procedures designed to produce data to the National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy (NSSDA) and is intended for use at 1" = 40 ' mapping scale.

This polygon layer contains 11 wards and 33 precincts within the City of Cambridge. These were adjusted in 2021 from the 2020 U.S. Census.
The Massachusetts Legislative boundaries do not follow these Cambridge Ward and Precinct boundaries in several areas. In part, this was because of the compressed timeline due to the Covid-19 pandemic during the 2020 US Census. Municipalities and the State were unable to coordinate precincts and legislative districts, and as a result sub-precincts within 9 precincts were unavoidable. Voters in a sub-precinct are listed on a separate voting list and have different ballots from other voters in the precinct during State Elections.
Purpose
This layer was created for general use by the Cambridge Election Commission and for public distribution. Cambridge wards and precincts which designate where voters will vote.
